Evil Deeds

I Felt like writing this post in English for some reason.

I don’t watch much TV lately. Partially because my studies leave me completely drained during the week and partially because there is really nothing worth seeing before 11pm anyway. And by that time I am either fast to sleep, enjoying the pint of my favorite Thunderbolt Ale or running around Newcastle airport. So when I did watch it last week, it was more of an exception than a rule.

You see, my professor - whom I like very much and thoroughly enjoy listening to (most of the time anyway) is unfortunate in such way, that she gave birth to autistic daughter. The condition being severe and quite unpredictable at times is a reason that our classes are sometimes cut short or even cancelled. That was the case last week - (she actually send us all SMS’s apologizing and informing us of a morning class cancellation) I found myself lying on the couch and enjoying a somewhat popular Australian show called ‘Rock Quiz’.

As the name suggests, the core of this show consists of a quiz with heaps (lots) of questions regarding rock music. The basic layout consists of two apposing teams, each with three members - two picked up from the audience and the third one usually being a well known Aussie rock/pop star.

I can’t remember who the ‘honored’ guests were (coming from overseas most of Aussie pop artists are obscure to me anyway). Anyway, as a rule, at the beginning of each show the participants are asked a few introductory questions and among others, a question about the first album they ever bought (The idea is, to make fun of pop music long past its popularity and obviously to tease the participants). And so this question was asked to one of the two ‘guest stars’.

She was in her mid thirties, looked quite unsecured and very reluctant to tell what her music of choice was at the time. After some thirty-or-so seconds of nagging (by the audience and hostess) her respond went something like this:” Well I am quite a shamed to admit it right now (embarrassing laughter / eyes rolling), but my first album was actually Thriller by Michael Jackson” (Hiding her face behind her hands in embarrassment). I didn’t know what to ting honestly. Judging from puzzled expressions all over the set I was not the only one. She went on quickly to explain about charges recently brought against Michael and how she would never buy his music if she knew then what she knows now (yes your knowledge is indeed all inspiring, I salute you).

Now, bear in mind that she was on a quiz show and probably a bit nervous… but still… What the hell was that? You are ashamed that you bought an album (and great one at that) some 20 years ago, because of something he did (or didn’t) quarter of a century later? What the hell? And somehow, you can find a credible reason for being ashamed? And to top it all off, you said that you drive a VW Bug, and I recall the referral to the thing as ‘one of the cutest toys ever’).

Uh yeah? Well, miss whoever you are, I offer you these two images to consider:

Which one is cuter? Now my dear whoever you are, I can understand that you (most likely) are not clairvoyant, and that at the time of your album purchase you had no way of knowing what Michael is going to(or not going to) do. On the other hand, the history of your ‘toy’ can easily be found anywhere.
